Emergency parachutes

Your descent rate on a emergency parachute depends on :

  1. The design of the canopy

  2. The area of the canopy (the bigger the better)

  3. The weight of you and your kit

Parachute descent rate equation

Mike Townsend, who is our local parachute expert and registered BHPA packer, has devised a spreadsheet to save you the trouble of getting your slide rules out. Follow the link to the Emergency Parachute Calculator to load it. (To use it you will need Microsoft Excel or Open Office loaded onto your computer, and will need to enable Macros).

Mike offers a repack service to club members for £25, or can often be found at club meetings if you need advice.
