Richard in Norway (Loen, Balestrand, Ulvik and Bergen)

Managed to persuade the missus to take my glider on a touring holiday in Norway. Due to the relatively intense itinerary, given the iffy weather over there, I didn't expect too much flying, but it did work out rather well.

Most sites are a 'walk up' and I mean a 'walk up'. 430 metres was the highest I was prepared to walk and I only did that once. Voss and Bergen had some form of mechanical lift to the top, but Voss was rained out the morning we passed through it and it was far too windy in Bergen. Loen and Ulvik were the main places I flew. 10 extended ttb's from high farmers fields (all with permission and some amusement, especially in Ulvik where most had never seen a PG in the flesh before!) None of the flights were greater in length than 30 minutes and XC's were out of the question, but the scenery was fantastic. Launch sites are rare (i.e. without crops, trees and powerlines).

Website preparation is all in Norwegian, so local hotel translation for each site is the only option.

Finance preparation is also required - 6 per pint !!!!

Malvern 11 May 2005

Weather Jack predicted a 4 with light E so all the PGs were out.

I landed at my sister's place at Sutton St Nicholas for an easy retrieve. Thought about trying to fly back but then remembered I was on a PG. I couldn't get down - thermals like policemen - always around when you didn't want them! Howard (don't know his sir name) landed by Hay Bluff. I'm sure some must have gone a long way - it was a classic day.
