…silence…
R ight! It has
come to my attention that there is too little input from you pilots! For pity’s
sake someone go out and do a cross-country or crash something or punch a
conservator or policeman and then write a blow-by-blow account of it and send
it to me! I have nothing to edit. The first person to send me an account of
anything will get a prize (can’t be more specific than that but it’ll probably
be egg shaped and made of chocolate with a yellow and white crème centre).
Thanks Tim!
Safe flying, Richard.

Problems at Rhossili: During
recent good flying days at this fantastic site there have been some problems
with people not following the rules agreed with the National Trust. Basically
there seems to have been some problems with people taking-off and landing in
areas where it is not allowed, causing problems with the local farmer and the
NT.
Summary: There are two dedicated takeoff areas, one at the pimple and one at
the top of the hill near the trig point. Use only these areas for taking off
and top landing. Pilots must not take off or land on the raised beach(the grassy plateau at the base of the hill); it is an
area of Special Scientific Interest. Taking off or landing on the cliffs is not
permitted. The cliffs can be flown by taking off and landing on the pimple.
Bottom landing can be anywhere on the beach but pilots must be aware of the
public when coming in to land. Use only the recognised footpaths when returning
from the beach to the hilltop.
Full details are on the SWWSC website.
Dear Doreen,
There are some strange
people I share this planet with. Luckily, I only ever get to read their
letters. Ask
me anything – yes anything!
Dear Doreen,
The Club XC Clinic brought to mind my 3 top tips for maximising performance:
Clouds - always fly to the clouds, never fly into the blue holes
Lift - keep optimising your 360s to get the best climb rate
Intentions - keep scanning around at other clouds and gliders so you can decide
Track - check your direction for possible airspace or other problems
Now I'm sure there's an acronym in there somewhere, but being a man I'm
damned if I can find it! You're a lady who's probably toyed with this
before, can you help me put my finger on it?
Yours,
Harry Palmes
Dear Harry
That’s 4 top tips. I know exactly what
you are looking for. How about LICT? As in I have this flying thing lict. Hmm,
maybe needs some more fiddling. I personally have another set of top tips I
always go by for an alpine launch:
Lay out paraglider
Inflate
Wing above head
Yell – “I’M TAKING OFF!”
LIWLY. Bit of a mouthful - I can’t really get my tongue around that one!
Again, maybe this needs some more time spending on it. I’m sure once I’d
grasped the fundamentals I could straighten it out a bit – maybe expand it a
little to make it a more memberable acronym.
I hope this helps, Doreen.
Dear Doreen
I have recently begun my paraglider training, having decided to pack in my old hobby of breeding boxers (before you ask: prize fighters, not dogs). Anyhowsup, the thing that surprised and confused me about this new hobby is the amount of jargon between pilots that I don’t understand. The trouble is, being a lady; I’m often embarrassed to ask because I don’t want to appear as a dumb blonde (I’m bottle brunette anyway). Anyhowsup, I keep hearing pilots refer to a cross country for instance. What is a cross country for instance?
Yours Petula Divan
Dear Petula
A good example of a cross country would

I hope this helps, Doreen.
Dear Doreen,
I have a question for you and although it may not seem flying related, there is a bit of flying history behind my question. My question is: do you think we may be related? I’ll give you some background, which may help you decide.
My great great grandfather Geronimo
Winnebago was an American Indian who came over to the
Yours Daren Winnebago.
Dear Daren,
Say these words: Campervan, Winnebago, Campervan, Winnebago.
Do these names sound at all related? How can Campervan even remotely be a
corruption of Winnebago? For your information, my ancestry is Dutch. My great
great great grandfather René Camper Van Gogh left Holland (after a big argument
with his brother over paint pigmentation recipes) to start a tin mine in
Cornwall. He dropped the Gogh to distance himself from brother Vincent (who,
bizarrely, dropped Camper from his name over the same familial disputations)
and to enable himself to fit more comfortably with the locals – there being a
good many Campervans in that part of the country.
I hope this helps, Doreen

World News Is Joerg Bajewski Ukrainian for ‘pull the other one’ do you think?
Only 30km into the task on Wednesday, near Wallaby Ranch, I thought I would soon have to land. I was only 350 meters above the ground and the west wind was blowing hard. Suddenly a small sport plane flew beside me and the pilot waved and rocked his wings, indicating I should follow. I didn't know who this was or what the pilot meant so I just kept flying as I had been.
The pilot then
dived down to a large dark field nearby and skimmed back and forth across it at
10 meters (if that high) all over this field. He knew what he was doing
and in just a moment I was thrilled to be in the thermal the pilot had just
triggered for me. As I climbed at 3 meters per second, the pilot flew
back up to me and gave me a thumbs up. Now I understood and waved back my
thanks. After this, I flew the rest the task with an ear-to-ear grin.

“I can see our house from here!”
A 73-year-old Kaysville man and his son
are being flown to the hospital after their paraglider aircraft crashed
into a home in western Davis County.
The accident happened at 1700 South 4000
West in Syracuse, Utah.
Police say the 50-year-old pilot from Virginia was flying the aircraft when it
slammed into the roof of the house.
The cause of the crash and the extent of the victims' injuries are not known at
this time.
Police say the FAA
has no jurisdiction over aircraft of that size so local authorities will be
overseeing the investigation

Flight Types
Open Distance
(score = distance)
Open Distance flights do not have any
turnpoints. Open distance flights will score the straight-line distance from
the start point to the end point.
Dog-Leg (DL)
score = distance
Dog-Leg flights are open distance flights with a
single turnpoint. The turnpoint does not need to be declared beforehand. The
turnpoint is permitted when pilots are forced to make a substantial change in
direction.
Out and Return
(OR) score = distance x 2 when the majority of the flight is out of ridge lift.
Out and Return flights commence at a start
point, go round a single turnpoint, and return to the original start point. The
coordinates of the start point and finish point are therefore identical. The
start/finish point may be different to the actual launch/landing points but the
flight distance is only measured from the start, to the turnpoint and back.
FAI Triangle (T)
score = distance x 3 when the majority of the flight is out of ridge lift.
An FAI Triangle is one which satisfies the FAI’s
28% Rule (shortest side must be greater than, or equal to, 28% of the distance
flown). To fly a triangle you must round three turnpoints, and return to the
original start point. The coordinates of the start point and goal are therefore
identical and for declared triangles and local records, must be one of the
turnpoints. The start/goal point may be different to the actual launch/landing
points.
Special Rule to
encourage pilots to attempt triangle flights
Note that for non-declared triangles, using GPS
verification, you can fly a loop and you will be scored the best triangle which
can be fitted inside it. Your track log points must cross to complete the loop.
This means you don’t have to start and finish at a turnpoint but may start
midway along a leg. This is to encourage pilots to try triangle flights.
Flat Triangle
(FT) score = distance x 2
A Flat Triangle is a triangular flight as above,
except that it does not conform to the FAI 28% rule. Completed Flat Triangle
flights score the distance multiplied by 2 when the majority of the flight is
out of ridge lift.
Failed Triangle
(score = distance)
A Failed Triangle is an attempt at a triangular
flight in which the pilot fails to make it back to the start point. Failed
Triangles score the total distance from the start, around up to two turnpoints
and back towards the finish point.
