May Meeting
A new hang gliding video will be shown. Please bring along your videos to Swap and/or Show.
Is Bryan leading the Go-For-It League?
With a 30k to Winchcombe and a 20k on Saturday, Bryan may be neck and neck with Rob Davies who made it to Hay Bluff on Saturday, although Hay is probably over 50k. Nick C also went over the back on Saturday, but my guess is that he would have just flown home to Ross.
New Committee
Peter Wood is the new chairman - he flies paragliders and paramotors and has very recently moved to Bransford. Otherwise there were few changes other than that Bryan Hindle will be Treasurer as well as Membership Secretary, and Chris Smith is now officially Webmaster, and is actively helping develop the Website that Ken Shail has bought and set up to help promote the club. At the first meeting of the new committee there was a feeling that more needs to be done to encourage local pilots to join the club. As I am no longer prepared to mail out the Newsletter, having spent a fair few flyable Saturday mornings doing it over the past few years, the committee are pulling together to maintain postal communication with Members, possibly in the form of a simpler newsletter.
MINUTES OF THE AGM APRIL 10th 2002 at The Plume of Feathers Castlemorton.
Apologies. Received from Gordon Allison and Rob Davies.
The event was competently presided over by the President, Ken Shail.
Chairmans Report.
The Chairman ( Nick Collins) reported a poor year for the club, because of the prolonged outbreak of F&M. However, he also reported a number of good club outings to coastal sites that were F&M free.
Secretarys Report. There was no report.
Treasurers Report.
The treasurer ( Roy Dade) reported that the club finances were in good order. We have approximately £2300 in club funds. The treasurer advised that the club fees remained the same (£15.00) for the coming year. This was voted in. Suggestions for any advantageous ways of using club funds were requested.
Site Officers Report.
No problems with sites apart from the national F&M problems.
It was requested that Tony Jones should write a report on the west side (pinnacle) landing fields (areas, access and owners etc) for publication to club members.
It was thought necessary to encourage PG pilots to land in the official field (east side) and not in the football field.
Membership Secretarys Report.
Bryan reported that club membership had reduced from 57 to 41. This may have been influenced by F&M. Reminders were to be sent to the 16 members who had not rejoined.
Competitions
There were no competitions organised, because of the restricted flying(F&M).
Safety.
There was no safety report. It was stated by members, however, that there had been no accidents to club members during the year.
Derek Evans brought up the issue of encouraging HG pilots to used the correct terms when taking off. There was a need to be more disciplined at launch.
Social Sec.
An extra effort will be made this year to get a repack meeting organised.
Publicity.
It was recognised that the club did not advertise itself enough. Brian Pilcher will investigate placing our organisations name in the local library etc.
Club Coach.
Alan stated that we had hosted a very successful club coach course this year.
Thanks to Bryan for the organisation of the venue etc.
Election of new officers.
New Club Officers were elected as follows:-
President - Ken Shail.
Chairman - Peter Wood.
Treasurer and Membership Sec - Bryan Hindle.
Secretary - John Bevan.

Venue for Club meetings.
Flying Reports
13th April.Went to Builth. Sat on hill most of the day. Rigged and de-rigged. Paragliders flying occasionally and slope landing. On odd occasions they got thermals to about 1000ft.
Nick and Derek went to Minehead. Wind 2-3mph. They did not fly, but Nick reccied the bomb out area between Porlock Weir and Bossington
Thursday 25th April. Bryan Hindle takes off from the Worcesterhire Beacon and in two minutes is heading over the back. There is actually very little wind, and Paddy McCarthy who takes off five minutes later, fails to get more than ten minutes flying the next two hours. Meanwhile, cloudbase is at four thousand feet, where the drift is only 8mph. Bryan flies to the end of the cloud street at the junction of the M50 and M5, and decides to head south. He finds another climb, but only to 3000' or so, and then glides over to touch down near Winchcombe, having flown 30k in 1 hour and forty-four minutes. Paddy then races over to fetch him, no doubt anxious to catch up on the details of Bryan's flight! Chris Smith flew the Beacon later.
Saturday 4th May
Nick C, Rob D and Bryan go over the back of the Malverns.
Sunday May 5th. Flew Builth today with some Myndies. Max height gain 1350ft, but could not get away. Perhaps Nick's theory about this site is a reality. Whilst we were there we were over flown by pilots from the British Open ( TO was Corndon). First by a paraglider!!!!!!!, then by a Class 2 and then by a Class 1. Did not see any more. Other PG's at Builth were having fun.
Great meal at The Hundred House on the way home. Met two dogs in the pub; Tiny and Bark. Apparently Bark is very intelligent. He is the only dog that visits the Hundred House that can say his own name.
Regards, John.
Meanwhile there is a competition on the Blorenge and many go over the back, some making the coast. The wind is cold and the sun is strong making for excellent thermals. Bryan goes up Leckhampton, but considers the thermal strength too high to take off.

Flying Doc-Rot
Working as a GP I have noticed that there may be conspiracy afoot, for Drug Companies to become involved in free flying. The following examples illustrate my theory:
There is a contraceptive coil called NOVAguard. Perhaps the paragliding equivalent would be a back protector made by NOVA?
UPjohn makes a product called UPrima. This is an injection for impotency. It turns "floppies" into "stiffies". Perhaps they have cracked the paragliding/hang-gliding metamorphosis?
Gaviscon ADVANCE is a new formulation of a liquid for indigestion. Maybe the next ADVANCE glider will be called "Gaviscon", following in the footsteps of the Epsilon?
If anyone has spotted any other examples, please let me know. On the other hand maybe I am just getting a bit paranoid

Safe T-Lines

Pre-flight checks
n the last Edition of Skywings there is a report about the PWC Competition in Mexico. A large contingent went from the UK and wrote about their experiences. Commenting on Task 2 a pilot wrote, "I launched early but discovered my speed system entangled and the glider behaving worryingly. I flew out and fixed it on a glide but took time to regain position". The next day the same pilot had this to say about Task 3, "I launched more conservatively, but this time discovered a brake handle knotted in the risers. I flew out to fix it "
Now it is very easy to be an "arm chair" critic. I was not there; I did not experience the stresses and the excitement. But reading between the lines, it does seem that the pre-flight checks were not done properly. We have all done things wrong and got away with them: Speed bar line through leg-strap, straps not done up, helmet not done up the list can go on and on.
It is all too easy to forget to do some, part or even all of your pre-flight checks. This is particularly more likely when under stress and pressure, such as when in a competition. The only remedy is to have your checklist written down and accessible. You then go through them like any ordinary pilot. You only take-off when they are all checked and OK.
Last year I wrote an article on Accidents and here is the paraglider checklist that I suggested then, with one amendment (thanks to Chris Sturdy for suggesting the addition of "weather" with reference to any likely change during the flight and in the proposed landing area)
